Brief

Sew is an encompassing app for your eco-friendly clothes recycling solutions. Use no longer worn clothes in your wardrobe to craft most fashion styles on any reusable fabric, including different cutting skills, how to repurpose different materials, re-style, etc. Interactive tutorials will guide you to become eco-friendly clothes upcycle master.

Problem

Did you know that by wearing a t-shirt or pair of jeans four times more than usual, you can save up to 75% of the freshwater that would have been used for producing the garment? Additionally, by prolonging the use of your clothing items by only three months, you can reduce their carbon, waste, and water footprint by 5-10%.

I genuinely believe that our actions, as well as the people, businesses, and organizations we choose to support, can make a positive impact on our environment. That's why I aim to educate and inspire fashion and craft enthusiasts to adopt a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Goals

  • Easy to find ideas for upcycling clothes, easy to follow step-by-step learning, list of materials, provide online or locations for a shopping list.

  • Able to create a mood board for fashion ideas.

Quantitative Research

User Interview

I have conducted three interviews with potential users. I asked them questions regarding what they wished to see in SEW. Here are the quotes that I got from them.

Offering ideas for repurposing old clothes could be helpful for those who don't want to put in the effort themselves.

Proper planning and partnering with responsible businesses are key to successful recycling programs.

I am wondering whether it is possible to recycle all clothes through this app. How can we ensure that we are not wasting any materials?

User Needs

How to make it easy enough for people to use? People want to see different ways in reuse and upcycle.

Question to think: The topic is interesting. People are interested of the product- what can offer to people?

Most of the people were interested of more details about how they won’t actually waste the old clothes.

How to recognize fabric, which ones can be reuse, which ones are not recyclable.

User Persona

Taskflows

Scenario 1 :

Pick the Memory bear DIY project, add all the materials to shopping list and check the shopping list.

Scenario 2 :

Share article “Where to recycle old clothes: 20 textile recycling drop off locations” to Facebook story.

Scenario 3 :

Save the Blue jean tote bag DIY idea to Design Collection “Bags”.

Usability Testing

Based on the feedback I received from my user testing, I made new adjustments to my design. This time I focused more on the minor elements, such as the copy and the infographics, on the webpage in order to optimize the experience further.

Key Conclusions

  • Because of the Task name wasn’t unclear, leaded tester to a difficult option.

  • The slider on the side of the page was not necessary.

  • Reconsider icon and content.

  • To have a persistent nav to have a better understanding of the structure of the site.

  • Create a sitemap to help, delete unneeded steps.

  • Reorganize the item page, how to manage more info together. More details.

  • Add user icon.

I'm open to new opportunities and would love to hear from you.
